Halo-Halo.This Filipino Dessert is one of the most popular summer snacks in the Philippines. During those hot months, every corner in cities and rural areas are brimming with small stalls that sell halo-halo to everybody. This delicious dessert is often reasonably priced and much cheaper than commercial ice cream. But nothing beats the homemade version of halo-halo because it has a scoop of ice cream on top.
By the way, the term ‘halo-halo’ literally means ‘mix-mix’. Halo-halo is just an affectionate nickname for a dessert that is made from mixing together of up to a dozen different ‘sweet’ ingredients, not including shaved ice and evaporated milk.
All You Need to Make a Glass of Special Halo-Halo:
Red monggo
Jackfruit (langka)
Purple Yam (halaya)
White Beans
Leche flan
Macapuno
Gelatin
Nata de coco
Kaong
Garbansos
Banana (saba)
Sweet potato (kamote)
Tapioca balls (sago)
Ice cream
1 glass with wide mouth or a semi-deep serving bowl
Shaved ice
Evaporated milk
Just One Scoop of Everything!
Use a glass with wide mouth, a tall dessert glass, or semi-deep serving bowl. Pack it with finely shaved ice. Drizzle with a half cup of evaporated milk. Arrange one tablespoon of every ingredient available on top of the ice. Most ingredients are commercially prepared and can be bought in supermarkets or at wet markets. Serve with some bread sticks, a glass of cold water, and a spoon, of course. Enjoy!
